My Stay at Panahouse in Panajachel, Lake Atitlán | Guatemala

I stayed 1 week at the Panahouse in Panajachel, Lake Atitlán.

After living below the poverty line in San Pedro I needed a hotel/hostel/guest house that worked.

I chose the Panahouse in Panajachel on the other side of the lake on the recommendation of a friend and it didn’t disappoint.

I had messaged the PanaHouse through WhatsApp, linked via their Facebook page. I committed myself to a week straight away.

It seemed that I had not learnt my lesson from San Pedro, committing without ‘road testing’ the place for at least one night first. But I was keen to get a weekly discount. 🤣

But it turned out OK. Well, much more than just OK.

My new modus operandi is to try and bypass booking dot com after, they were pretty abrupt after only my 2nd no-show in 15 years. Big cooperations will have to work a bit harder for my dollar now. Also, I’d rather hotels don’t have to pay them an increasingly higher commission.

Anyways, back to the PanaHouse.

Ok, it was a bit tricky to find. But it is exactly where it is on Google Maps. Entrance is down an alley (not marked on Google Maps), off Callejon Los Quenun, about half way along, opposite the Tortilleria La Bendicion (4 for 1 Q for a cheap breakfast)

The Panahouse is managed by David a Belgian guy and has a few volunteers doing a very good job of running the place though I only met one as it’s the rainy season and we are still in the corona-pandemic.

I had room 4 on the ground floor. A twin-bedded room with my own bathroom complete with a power shower.

The beds are very comfortable and everything was very clean.

There are 2 floors, ground and first plus the rooftop:

Awesome roof top to chill:

The fully functioning kitchen at the Panahouse, Panajachel. Perfect for the world traveller.

As I mentioned at the top, I needed a hotel/hostel that worked. A weird thing to say? Well, if you sell a room that offers Wi-Fi you should expect that it works. A room should not get wet inside when it rains, otherwise, you might as well be camping. And a kitchen must be functioning as such. And the Panahouse ticked all the boxes.
